Internships for high school and college students
Apprenticeships for early-career professionals
The Internship/Apprenticeship Program provides an in-depth theatrical experience for high school and college students, and early-career professionals.
Students and young Theatre Artists are given an invaluable learning opportunity along with individual attention. Each Intern and Apprentice is taken under the wing of the staff, production team and cast, who cultivate and foster their personal strengths and interests during the process of mounting a professional season.
Vivid Stage works with several Interns and/or Apprentices each session. Apprentices receive an hourly wage; interns receive class credit in accordance with their schools’ requirements. Many of our interns have gone on to careers in theatre, and one of our recent stage management interns commented, “Working with Dreamcatcher (Vivid Stage) has totally changed my idea of theatre. I’ve learned so much—high school was nothing like this. I loved every minute of it!”
High School interns have come from all over northern New Jersey: from South Orange, Maplewood, Bloomfield, Montclair, Union, Summit and other areas. College interns have come from programs at Drew University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Kean University, Montclair State University, and Ramapo College, among others. Early-career professionals have graduated from Bucknell University, Kean University, Muhlenberg College, and many more.
Internships/Apprenticeships
Artistic Management (College Students and Young Professionals Only)
The Artistic Management intern would assist with producing, administrative and marketing activities associated with presenting a small professional theatre season. The Intern will learn first hand the workings of a non-profit theatre and its relationships with the community and other professional organizations. The ideal intern will be organized, reliable and a good collaborator with a positive outlook.
Audience Services
The Audience Services intern would help provide the important bridge between the public and the company, providing assistance in greeting the public, working in the box office, answering questions and facilitating concessions. Interns would have to be available for some combination of Thursday, Friday and Saturday night performances and some Sunday matinees, and should be friendly, confident and comfortable handling simple monetary transactions.
Development/Fundraising
The Development Intern will assist with activities including researching new grant sources, preparing grant proposals and reports, and working with the Board on fundraising and other cultivation events. The ideal intern will be organized, reliable and be a good collaborator.
Education and Outreach (Summer Only, College Students and Young Professionals Only)
This intern will act as an Assistant Director in the Vivid Dreamers Summer Theatre Program at Vivid Stage. During this three-week program (with one week of prep), students in grades 4-10 will form an ensemble by studying theatre arts together and creating and performing their own show. The Assistant Director will assist all teachers in the program in their classes, and will help to create the script and run rehearsals for the show, which will be performed on the last day of the program.
Stage Management (September-May Only)
The Assistant Stage Manager will act as a support for the Stage Manager, taking notes at rehearsals, organizing the backstage, running the backstage area during shows, and setting and resetting the stage for performances. They will also learn the rules of a Small Professional Theatre contract with Actors’ Equity Association and how to manage the design and running crew for productions. They will need to be available for all performances of the show, and at least the last two weeks of rehearsal prior to opening.
Technical Production (September-May Only)
Production Interns are involved in all aspects of play production, assisting the director and designers on sets and lighting, or working as costume or props manager and front-of-house or running crew. They are mentored by skilled artists and receive hands-on experience in a professional environment. Tech work takes place at various hours and rehearsals and performances take place in a combination of days, evenings and on weekends.
